The Town of Greater Napanee says there is no risk to public safety after a hazardous materials incident on Kimmetts Side Road that prompted evacuations and road closures on June 23.
The Greater Napanee Fire Department crews were called to 248 Kimmetts Side Road at about 10:30 a.m. and remained on scene for roughly six hours. Firefighters established a safety perimeter, evacuated nearby homes and businesses, and monitored the situation with support from several provincial agencies.
According to the fire department, the incident involved a gaseous release caused by the mixing of industrial chemicals used in the recycling of precious metals. The cloud is believed to have been a nitric oxide mixture, although the exact cause remains under investigation.
myFM has reached out to the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks for confirmation on the chemical composition of the hazardous material, but have not yet heard back.
Monitoring confirmed the release had subsided and was contained within the building, allowing roads to reopen and residents to return home later that day.
About 15 people were temporarily accommodated at Best & Bash Arena. All affected businesses have resumed normal operations and a specialized cleanup crew has completed decontamination work at the site.
