Nathan Townend has stepped down as L&A Warden and Loyalist Township Deputy Mayor to take on a new role with the county.
The County of Lennox and Addington has appointed Townend as its new Director of Communications and Community Development. The county announced the appointment Monday, saying Townend will begin the role in August.
Townend brings years of municipal leadership experience to the position. He served eight years on Loyalist Township Council and four years on Lennox and Addington County Council, most recently as warden. He has also held leadership positions with the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, the Rural Ontario Municipal Association, the Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus and Southeast Health Unit.
County officials say Townend’s background in communications, government relations and community development will help support council priorities and strengthen engagement with residents, businesses and community partners. Townend holds a master’s degree from Queen’s University and is expected to complete a Master’s of Political Management degree from Carleton University later this year.
Loyalist Township says Council will now address the vacancy at an upcoming meeting. “In accordance with the provisions of the Municipal Act, 2001, the resulting vacancy on Loyalist Township Council will be addressed through the legislated process. Council will determine the appropriate course of action to fill the vacancy at a future meeting, in keeping with the requirements set out in the Act.”
