A large barn fire on South Shore Road caused an estimated $5 million in damage and drew a major response from local and neighbouring fire departments.
The Greater Napanee Fire Department was called to the scene shortly after 7 p.m. on Monday, June 8. Firefighters arrived to find a barn measuring about 800 feet by 200 feet fully engulfed in flames.
South Shore Road was closed for several hours as crews shuttled water from Road 1 to battle the blaze. Smoke from the fire was visible from communities across the region, including Kingston, Belleville, Deseronto and Prince Edward County.
Mutual aid assistance was provided by fire departments from Deseronto, Loyalist Township, Mohawk Territory and Stone Mills. Fire crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading to a large neighbouring barn despite the intense conditions.
No injuries or fatalities were reported.
The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal has been notified and may attend the scene because damage estimates are expected to exceed $5 million.
