The Special Investigations Unit has cleared a Belleville Police Service officer after a man was seriously injured during a police pursuit earlier this year.
In a report released Tuesday, SIU Director Joseph Martino said there were no reasonable grounds to believe the officer committed a criminal offence.
The incident happened on Feb. 1, 2026, after police received reports of a suspected impaired driver operating a Dodge Charger in Belleville.
Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled, speeding through stop signs and red lights during a three-kilometre pursuit.
The chase ended on George Street when the driver lost control and crashed into a pole.
The 44-year-old man was taken to hospital with fractures to his clavicle, neck and ribs.
Martino noted the officer drove at high speeds at times on wet and snowy roads, but concluded the driving did not amount to a marked departure from the standard of care.
