The County of Lennox and Addington has agreed to help fund an invasive species control project after concerns were raised about a growing outbreak along the Napanee River.
During its May 13 regular meeting, council heard a request from the Friends of the Napanee River for support to combat flowering rush, an invasive aquatic plant spreading between Yarker and Camden East.
A staff report said the plant has expanded over the past four years and is now considered a significant outbreak in the area. The species, originally from Eurasia, grows along shorelines and can damage native ecosystems.
The group, Friends of the Napanee River, had received earlier funding to study the issue but was later denied additional support for a spraying program, leaving a funding shortfall of $6,000 to $7,000.
Councillors raised questions about herbicide use and possible liability, but staff said the issue appears localized.
Council agreed to explore funding through the noxious weeds budget.
