Local Police are reminding drivers to properly use zipper merges as construction season brings more lane closures and traffic slowdowns across the region.
Police say a zipper merge happens when two lanes of traffic combine into one, with drivers taking turns entering the open lane at the designated merge point. Officers say motorists should continue using both lanes until the merge area instead of moving over too early.
According to police, early merging can increase congestion, create longer traffic backups and lead to unsafe driving behaviour.
Motorists are being encouraged to maintain a safe and steady speed, allow space for other vehicles to merge and avoid blocking drivers who are attempting to enter the open lane. Police are also asking drivers to remain patient and avoid aggressive behaviour behind the wheel.
Drivers are reminded to slow down in construction zones, follow posted signs and watch carefully for workers, pedestrians and cyclists throughout the busy roadwork season.
