Loyalist Township is inviting families to cast a line and enjoy a full day of outdoor fun as Family Fishing Day returns to Amherst Island this weekend.
The free event takes place Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Stella Bay Park and Dock.
It is part of Ontario’s Free Family Fishing Events, which allow people to fish without a licence during select dates.
Mayor Jim Hegadorn says there will be a shuttle bus on the island for any pedestrians who take the ferry across.
Organizers say the event is designed to bring families together while encouraging people to explore the outdoors.

Visitors can also explore the nearby Neilson Store Museum & Cultural Centre to learn more about the island’s history.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own fishing rods and life jackets, but equipment will also be available through the Napanee and District Rod and Gun Club. Experts will be on site to share information about water safety, conservation and local ecosystems.
A new addition this year is Fishing Friendzy, which will offer hands-on learning experiences aimed at inspiring young anglers.
The event is free, but pre-registration is required. Organizers recommend registering early, as supplies for children’s giveaway items are limited.
To register, you can visit the Townships website.
