The Ontario Provincial Police are warning residents in Prince Edward County about an increase in fraud attempts involving fake charity donations.
Police say scammers are calling people while posing as officers and asking for donations on behalf of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. The callers are using pressure tactics to push victims into sending money quickly.
Investigators say the scams are not connected to police or legitimate charities and may come through phone calls, texts or email.
Residents are urged to be cautious of unsolicited donation requests, especially those that demand immediate action. Officials say legitimate charities do not use aggressive tactics or request payments in cryptocurrency or other unusual methods.
People are encouraged to verify charities through the Canada Revenue Agency and avoid sharing personal or financial information with unknown callers.
Suspicious activity can be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or local police.
