Greater Napanee council is considering a major shift in its long-running trail plan, stepping away from using the former Canadian National (CN) spur line and backing a new route along Goodyear Road, along with the planned sale of surplus rail corridor land north of Highway 401.
Town CAO Matthew Grant said the change reflects years of work and a push for realistic options.
Grant shared with myFM one of the reports to go before council speaks to out of town trails.
Parks, recreation and culture director Chris Brown said in-town trail construction is planned to begin in fall 2026, starting with a loop through Riverside Cemetery before extending north toward Highway 401.
We asked Grant more about their timeline
The updated plan marks a turning point in a project more than a decade in the making, shifting toward a phased approach focused on achievable trail development rather than the contested rail corridor.
Council will consider the recommendations at its next meeting, where staff are expected to seek approval for both the Goodyear Road alignment and the proposed land sale agreement.
