The Ontario government is investing more money locally to connect more people to primary care, as part of its plan to ensure everyone in the province has access to a family doctor by 2029.
Hastings-Lennox and Addington MPP Ric Bresee made the announcement on Friday in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory.
The funding will support the expansion of the Tsi Kanonhkhwatsheríyo Indigenous Interdisciplinary Primary Care Team (TTK IIPCT), which provides culturally appropriate care to Indigenous communities and their families across eastern Ontario. Services include primary care, allied health support and traditional healing.
Chief R. Donald Maracle shared it’s always a happy day when we can gatherfor a funding announcement that will support the members of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte.
The investment will help expand services in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory and Bancroft, while also supporting a new clinic in Deseronto. The clinic will begin accepting new patients as part of the effort to connect more residents to care.
Mobile health services will also be introduced to improve access in rural areas, including north Lennox and Addington and north Frontenac.
TTK Executive Director Tera Osborne told myFM more about the mobile unit.
The province says the funding is part of its broader Primary Care Action Plan, which includes support for 124 teams across Ontario. The plan is expected to connect up to 500,000 more people to primary care.
The government says the latest investment marks another step toward improving access to care closer to home.
