UPDATE: Ontario’s police watchdog has invoked its mandate after a vehicle entered Lake Ontario in Greater Napanee late Tuesday night.
The Special Investigations Unit says an Ontario Provincial Police officer tried to stop a vehicle on Bath Road around 10:55 p.m. on April 21. Soon after, the vehicle went into a ditch and then into the water, where it became submerged.
Officials say it is not known how many people were inside.
Multiple units responded, including marine, aviation and underwater search teams, along with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre. Efforts to locate any occupants are ongoing.
Highway 33 remains closed at County Road 21 as the investigation continues.
Provincial police say no further details will be released due to the SIU investigation.

Original Article: Highway 33 remains closed in both directions between Bath and Greater Napanee after a vehicle entered the water late Tuesday night.
Emergency crews were called to the scene after 11 pm, shutting down the road between Bath and County Road 21.
As of Wednesday morning, the closure stretches eastbound at County Road 21 and westbound at County Road 7/ Church Street.
Police say the shutdown is expected to last for an extended period.
Workers at the plant are being allowed through the closure to get to work. Otherwise, Drivers are being asked to avoid the area and use detours along County Roads 7, 8 and 22.
