A planned integration between Fleming College and St. Lawrence College is drawing strong criticism from the Ontario Public Service Employees Union / Syndicat des employés de la fonction publique de l’Ontario (OPSEU/SEFPO).
The union says the announcement, made April 10, was shared as more than 2,500 delegates gathered for its annual convention, catching many off guard. OPSEU leaders argue the move reflects ongoing concerns about provincial funding for public colleges.
The union represents more than 200,000 workers across Ontario, including over 45,000 college staff. It says local unions and employees were not consulted before the decision was made.
Union officials warn the integration could lead to cuts and reduced support for students and communities, especially in smaller and rural areas. They also point to existing financial pressures facing colleges.
OPSEU says mergers are not inevitable and is calling for increased investment in post-secondary education, while vowing to continue advocating for workers and public services across the province.
