Southeast Public Health has extended a drug-related alert to Kingston after a sudden rise in suspected poisonings linked to the unregulated drug supply.
Officials say Consumption and Treatment Services reported a significant spike in drug poisonings among clients, with substances believed to contain fentanyl. Testing is underway to confirm what is in the drugs.
The alert follows a similar warning issued after increased emergency department visits in Hastings and Prince Edward counties. Health officials say the drug supply remains unpredictable and increasingly toxic.
Public health is urging people who use drugs to take extra precautions. Recommendations include avoiding using alone, not mixing substances such as alcohol, and using more slowly due to unknown potency.
Officials also stress carrying naloxone, a medication that can temporarily reverse an opioid overdose, and knowing how to use it. Free kits and training are available locally.
People are also urged to call 911 immediately in suspected overdose cases and use supervised consumption services when possible.
