Southeast Public Health is warning residents about a recent increase in drug-related events in Hastings and Prince Edward Counties.
The health unit says preliminary data from March 29 to April 5 shows a rise in emergency department visits linked to substance use. Community partners have also reported symptoms such as low heart rate, low blood pressure and prolonged sedation.
Officials are urging people to take precautions, including avoiding using drugs alone and not mixing substances, especially with alcohol. They also recommend carrying naloxone kits and using small amounts due to the unpredictable drug supply.
Supervised consumption services are available, including in-person options in Kingston and virtual support through the National Overdose Response Service.
Anyone who suspects a drug poisoning is urged to call 9-1-1 immediately for emergency medical help.
