The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society has welcomed another group of animals from Northern communities, bringing its 2026 total to more than 150.
The latest transfer includes 22 cats and five dogs that arrived March 14 after travelling up to 2,000 kilometres. The animals are now settling into centres in Sudbury, Orillia, Midland and Durham, where they will be prepared for adoption.
The organization says harsh winter conditions and limited access to veterinary care in Northern communities have increased the need for support. Earlier this year, it took in 18 puppies, followed by a nursing dog and her litter.
The Ontario SPCA works with partners to relocate animals, provide food and mobile wellness services, and support long-term population control.
Adoptable animals are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped before going to new homes.
