Local residents gathered at the Tamworth Legion Saturday morning to learn more about the proposed Alto high-speed rail project and its potential impacts on their community.
Heather Levy, a community organizer with the Save Stone Mills – No ALTO High Speed Rail group, said many residents were caught off guard by the project.
The open house featured three speakers. Ted Darby, chair of Friends of the Nappanee River, spoke on advocacy and the political process behind large-scale projects. Andrew Hyatt, a geotechnical engineer, discussed the hydrology of the area and how different routes could affect the land. Steven Raynor, a retired appraisal consultant, explained the process of property appraisal and expropriation.
She also shared her concerns about the project itself, sharing she fails to see how any of the routes work
Levy hopes the event helps residents better understand the project and encourages engagement.
