Greater Napanee and Stone Mills councils are weighing the potential impacts of a proposed high-speed rail line that could pass through Lennox and Addington County.
Greater Napanee council reviewed a staff report this week outlining a federal public consultation for a high-speed rail network between Toronto and Quebec City. An alternate route is being explored that would bring the line closer to Kingston and through parts of the county. There are currently no plans for a stop between Ottawa and Peterborough, though efforts continue to push for a station near Kingston.
CAO Matthew Grant will attend a regional stakeholder meeting on March 26 to gather more details. Staff are expected to report back to council afterward.
Stone Mills Township also discussed the proposal at its Monday meeting. Council unanimously passed a motion opposing the southern route alignment through or near the township, citing a lack of local benefit and concerns about expropriation and impacts on farmland and rural residents.
Alto will host public information meetings on Feb. 18 at the Storrington Lions Club in Inverary.
