Today we celebrate VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION DAY on 88.7 myFM…
Mac is a dedicated volunteer at the Lennox and Addington Ontario SPCA in Napanee.
Mac began volunteering in January 2025 after the loss of his beloved dog, Buddy. “I thought, why don’t I do some volunteering at the SPCA and put something back,” he said, explaining that spending time with the animals helps both him and the dogs.
He focuses mainly on dogs, helping them gain confidence and trust after difficult experiences. Mac recalled a dog named Missy Clyde, who took time to bond and adjust. It’s a “very special feeling when you’ve been with a dog for two or three occasions over a few days, and all of a sudden, he or she comes out of the cage and comes up to you and starts licking your hand.”
Mac encourages others to volunteer. “A dog has only one thing in its life and that’s you,” he said. He added, “It’s a two-way street. I get as much from the dogs as the dogs get from me.”
Volunteering at the SPCA offers emotional rewards and helps prepare animals for forever homes.
