Greater Napanee council has approved a five per cent Municipal Accommodation Tax after reviewing rates in nearby municipalities. The decision followed a report prepared by Clerk Jessica Walters, which compared Greater Napanee to communities such as Belleville, Brighton, Cobourg, Prince Edward County, and Kingston.
Town staff recommended a four per cent rate as a starting point, noting that five per cent would also fall within an acceptable range. The report showed that Kingston and Brighton have already adopted a five per cent MAT rate.
After discussion, council voted to set the tax at five per cent. The Municipal Accommodation Tax applies to short-term accommodations and is intended to help support tourism-related initiatives and services in the community.
