Greater Napanee council has approved the purchase and installation of two new sharps disposal receptacles in local parks.
The receptacles will be placed at Springside Park and Conservation Park, locations councillors say are commonly used for the disposal of sharps. Council also approved an operational plan outlining how both sites will be serviced.
Town staff say the move is meant to improve public safety and reduce the risk of needle injuries. CAO Matthew Grant noted the plan also includes a public education component, similar to the town’s encampment protocol.
South East Public Health currently operates four community sharps disposal kiosks in Napanee, located on Lower East Street, Lower John Street, 99 Advance Avenue and 26 Dundas Street.
The total cost of the two new receptacles is $3,514. The Town of Greater Napanee will cover the purchase, while South East Public Health will monitor and service the units once installed.
