A Napanee woman has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $12,000 from a vulnerable client she was hired to care for at Finlay House, a residence for people with acquired brain injuries.
Christina Eagles-Corbet entered the guilty plea on Jan. 13 in Ontario Court of Justice in Napanee. She admitted to theft over $5,000 between 2022 and 2023, as well as breach of trust and fraud connected to her role as a personal support worker from 2021 to 2023.
Court heard the victim suffered a double brain stem stroke in 2008 that left her non-verbal with limited mobility, though she remains cognitively aware. The woman depends on caregivers and receives monthly annuity payments to cover her care. Her mother oversees her finances.
Eagles-Corbet was hired in 2019 to provide one-on-one support and was the only caregiver with access to the victim’s bank account, debit card, and PIN. She was responsible for recording daily transactions.
The Crown said Eagles-Corbet falsified records, failed to keep receipts, and diverted funds for personal use. The total misappropriated amount was $12,680.
The judge noted the seriousness of the breach of trust but said the guilty plea spared the family a trial.
Sentencing is scheduled for March 24.
