Cataraqui Conservation has issued a Flood Watch for Millhaven Creek in Loyalist Township, covering the area from south of Highway 401 to the creek’s outlet at Lake Ontario.
The advisory comes after extremely cold temperatures on January 15 and 16 caused ice buildup in the creek, leading to higher water levels in some locations. Officials say ice constrictions can block water flow, causing levels to rise quickly upstream.
Temperatures are currently warming, which may help improve conditions in the short term. However, colder weather is forecast to return the night of January 19, raising concerns about additional ice formation.
Widespread flooding is not expected, but localized flooding remains possible. Areas where water levels are already reported to be high include near the intersections of Lucas Road and Millhaven Road, and County Road 4 and Millhaven Road.
Residents in flood-prone or low-lying areas are advised to move items out of floodplains. Cataraqui Conservation is also urging people to stay away from dams and fast-flowing water.
The Flood Watch remains in effect until January 21 at 11:59 p.m.
