Greater Napanee Council is set to vote tonight on whether to provide municipal support for a proposed Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on County Road 9. The project has raised concerns among local residents about environmental impacts, fire risks, and quality of life.
At a public meeting last week, neighbours voiced their worries. Carbon Free, the company behind the project, shared with myFM it is considering these concerns as part of ongoing consultations.
The report to council from staff recommends denying the municipal support request. Reasons include limited opportunity for meaningful community engagement before the submission deadline, uncertainty about whether the site can be developed as proposed, and potential environmental and geotechnical challenges that could affect construction.
The council meeting begins at 7 p.m. in Old Town Hall on John Street. Residents who cannot attend in person can watch the meeting live on the town’s YouTube channel.
