Morningstar Mission in Napanee is asking the community to help fill gift bags that will be handed out at its annual Christmas morning dinner. Staff say the holiday can be joyful for some, but many people in the community struggle with loneliness, stress and the rising cost of living.
myFM spoke with Gwen Babcock who says for years, the Mission has served a free Christmas Day meal for anyone who needs companionship or support. Guests also receive a small gift.
The program has changed over time, from laundry baskets to backpacks. This year, they are keeping things simple with small gift bags.
Natalie Martin says donations can include gloves, mittens, soft fleece blankets, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, body wash and face cream.
The Mission also prepares separate bags for children with colouring books, markers, toys and candy.
Babcock says it means a lot to those who receive these grifts, especially some single moms.
Gift bags can be dropped off at Morningstar Mission, 58 Water St W. Donations are needed by the Monday, December 22nd.
