Greater Napanee Council has approved the purchase of a $2.085 million aerial ladder fire truck to replace its 22-year-old Ladder 811. The decision comes after rising maintenance costs, outdated safety features, and reliability issues made replacement necessary.
Fire Chief Shawn Armstrong recommended a 103-foot KME-brand truck from Dependable Emergency Vehicles in Brampton, with delivery expected in January 2026. The current truck has exceeded its recommended service life, with repairs costing more than $11,000 in 2024 and $12,000 so far in 2025.
Council agreed the purchase is cost-effective, saving about $926,000 compared to waiting, with a down payment of $619,519 this year and financing the balance over 10 years. The new truck meets national safety standards, supports taller buildings, and strengthens emergency response in the growing community.
Mayor Terry Richardson and councillors praised the purchase as a smart investment in public safety. The motion passed, and the new aerial ladder is expected to arrive early next year.
