The Greater Napanee Fire Department is partnering with Planet Fitness on September 11 for a stair climb tribute to honour the first responders and civilians who died in the 2001 9/11 attacks in New York.
Participants will climb 110 floors on a stair climber, symbolic of the Twin Towers. Firefighters in full gear will attempt all 2,071 stairs, while police, EMS, and the public are invited to join free of charge. Neighbouring fire halls, local EMS, and Lennox & Addington OPP will also take part.
Before his climb, myFM spoke with Stone Mills Deputy Chief James Richmond, who says its important to understand the feats the firefighters went through that day.
myFM also spoke with Planet Fitness Napanee’s General Manager Kim Traill.
Traill says when you see the firefighters in their full gear climbing the stairs, it makes people remember the firefighters and victims who didn’t make it.
Planet Fitness has hosted the event for six years, donating equipment use and making annual contributions to Wounded Warrior. A donation table is set up at the gym to support the cause.
