Canada’s privacy commissioner says individuals have the right to have some information removed from search engine results, but Google is refusing to comply.
Commissioner Philippe Dufresne recommended Google de-list articles about a withdrawn criminal charge that caused ongoing harm to the individual involved.
Google argues such a move would restrict freedom of expression and access to information, and maintains the issue should be resolved by the courts.
The commissioner is considering legal action after years of proceedings that have shaped Canada’s debate on a digital “right to be forgotten.”
