Greater Napanee council is considering a stricter cell phone policy after staff updated guidelines on international travel. The new rules would apply to all council members and staff crossing any international border, not just to the United States.
Ellen Hamel, Manager of Financial and IT Services, said excluding councillors from the policy would still create a risk of data loss or security breaches. Deputy Mayor Brian Calver disagreed, arguing he has never been asked for his phone at the border. Councillor Bob Norrie strongly opposed the idea, saying staff and council should use their own phones while on vacation and that no one is too important to miss an email.
The proposed policy aims to protect sensitive information but sparked debate on balancing security with personal freedom.
