Ontario Provincial Police say they have laid new charges in a major investigation called Project Opal, tied to a string of armed bank robberies across the province.
Between December 2022 and March 2024, eight banks were robbed, including one in Belleville. Suspects used handguns, disguises, and even tied up employees. Investigators say more than $2 million was stolen but not recovered.
Three suspects were arrested last June during an attempted robbery in Field, and a fourth was arrested in Vaughan in September. On June 27, 2025, Roderick Newman, 33, of Coburg, was charged with two counts of robbery. He is in custody awaiting a court appearance.
A fifth suspect, Akeem Williams, 33, of Ajax, is still wanted. Police warn the public not to approach him and call authorities if seen.
Project Opal remains active as investigators continue to search for answers.
