Health officials are warning Kingston-area residents to stay alert for harmful algal blooms in lakes, rivers, and ponds this summer. Some blooms, including blue-green algae, can release toxins dangerous to people, pets, and wildlife.
Exposure can lead to skin irritation, nausea, vomiting, and even liver issues. These blooms are caused by a mix of natural conditions and human activity, such as warm temperatures, stagnant water, and excess nutrients like phosphorus.
People are urged not to swim, drink, or allow pets near water that may be affected. Surface water is never safe for drinking without proper treatment—boiling or UV systems won’t remove algal toxins.
During active blooms, avoid all recreational water activities, especially for young children who may accidentally swallow water. Fish from affected areas should also be avoided.
Residents can help prevent blooms by reducing fertilizer use and checking septic systems. Suspected blooms should be reported to the Spills Action Centre at 1-800-268-6060.
