A new $486,600 Grow grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation will support a three-year project to restore nature and strengthen Mohawk culture around the new Kenhtè:ke (Mohawk) Language and Cultural Centre.
The project is led by Tsi Tyónnheht Onkwawén:na (TTO) and Wintergreen Studios. It will help restore two acres of forest, meadow, and wetland on the Centre’s nine-acre site.
Callie Hill, CEO of TTO, shared their vision continues to grow, thanks to this grant.
The new Centre is set to open this fall and will allow TTO to expand its Mohawk language programming, which it has delivered for 20 years.
Wintergreen Studios brings experience in land-based education and will help involve the community in ecological restoration. Their founding director, Dr. Rena Upitis, says native plants will be added, invasive species removed, and new Indigenous medicine gardens will be created.
The goal is to pass on Indigenous knowledge and create a healthier local environment while honouring Mohawk teachings.
MPP Ric Bresee praised the project for protecting both culture and nature.
Organizers say it will benefit future generations by building respect for the land and sustainable living practices.
