Our local wine industry just got a big boost with the addition of 24 new grape varieties to the Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) certified list.
The provincial government made the announcement on June 17, saying the new grapes were chosen for their ability to produce high-quality wine, survive changing climates, and require fewer fertilizers and pesticides.
The VQA program, managed by the Ontario Wine Appellation Authority, ensures that certified wines meet strict standards for content and labelling. Each wine must pass testing and audits before getting the VQA label.
Government officials say the update helps modernize Ontario’s wine sector while supporting local farmers and producers.
The change comes just before Buy Ontario, Buy Canadian Day, which encourages people to choose local products.
Ontario’s wine industry is earning international attention, and the government hopes the new VQA options will help keep that momentum going.
