Town council is considering a new policy that would ban staff from taking Town-owned phones or devices with municipal data across any international border.
The recommendation came during the June 11 council meeting, following a report from Financial & IT Services. The proposed policy aims to protect sensitive data, reduce legal risks, and improve security.
Councillor Michael Schenk suggested the rule apply to all borders, not just the U.S. Deputy Mayor Brian Calver said more information is needed, noting that border agents usually target criminal activity, not municipal staff.
Council agreed to defer a decision to June 24 to allow staff to gather more details.
Councillor Bob Norrie also called for a new rule making work phones for work use only. Council passed a motion asking for a feasibility study on that issue.
The move follows a cyberattack in January 2024 that raised concerns about municipal data security.
