A 28-year-old Ottawa man is facing several serious charges, including attempted murder, after police responded to a domestic dispute in Belleville’s east end on Friday, May 30.
Police were called to the scene at 5:03 p.m. and arrived to hear an active altercation inside the home. Officers forcibly entered after discovering the door had been barricaded with a couch.
The man was arrested on-site for uttering death threats, forcible confinement, assault, breaching probation, and choking. Following an investigation by Belleville Police’s Criminal Investigations Division, an attempted murder charge was added after it was learned the man allegedly tried to drown the victim.
He was held in custody for a bail hearing.
To protect the identity of the victim, the suspect’s name has not been released.
Belleville Police urge anyone experiencing domestic violence or who suspects abuse to call 9-1-1 or reach out to local support services.
