Greater Napanee is taking action to improve emergency response after a dramatic water rescue in March left two firefighters injured.
During the rescue, a vehicle entered the fast-moving, icy waters of the Napanee River above the falls. Two firefighters entered the water to save the driver and were hurt in the process.
Following the incident, Deputy Fire Chief James Feeney conducted a full review and contacted the Ministry of Labour. Based on their recommendations, Feeney asked council to approve the replacement of the town’s ice-water rescue equipment.
Council approved the request at a recent meeting. The new equipment will cost $21,553 (plus HST), funded from reserves. An additional $9,209 (plus HST) will come from third-party cost recovery.
The upgrade is expected to improve safety for first responders and support faster, more efficient rescues in dangerous water conditions.
Town officials say the investment is an important step in keeping both residents and firefighters safe.
