Canada Post could face major delivery delays as more than 55,000 workers plan to go on strike this Friday. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers gave a 72-hour strike notice on Monday, marking the second work stoppage in six months.
The strike would halt all new mail and parcel deliveries. Only social assistance cheques and live animals will still be delivered, but no new animals will be accepted.
Canada Post warns that the strike will worsen its financial losses. The company lost $845 million in 2023 and says it cannot afford more disruptions.
The union says it is responding to threats of changes to work conditions and suspended benefits. It still hopes to reach a deal before the deadline.
A federal report released last week calls for big changes at Canada Post, including ending home delivery. The union strongly disagrees and says public feedback was ignored.
