Atura Power has returned to Greater Napanee Council with a new proposal for Phase 2 of its battery energy storage system (BESS) project.
The updated plan includes a larger 300-megawatt facility with up to eight hours of energy storage. It’s aimed at meeting Ontario’s rising electricity demands, which the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) says will increase by 75 per cent by 2050.
The proposed location is in the Lennox and Addington Generating Station industrial area. Atura plans to lease 15 to 20 acres of land currently used for farming.
While public consultation is set for June 26, not everyone is convinced. Councillor Michael Schenk raised concerns about the proximity to agricultural land and nearby homes.
Atura says it expects to submit its proposal to the IESO by December 18. If successful, construction would take place between 2028 and 2029.
