A hidden chapter of Canadian history will take centre stage on Tuesday, May 13 at the Museum of Lennox & Addington. Dr. Brooke Cameron, an English professor at Queen’s University, will present Little Wanderers: A Literary History of the British Home Children in Canada.
The talk begins at 7:00 p.m. at the museum (97 Thomas St. East), with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $3 or free for museum members. No pre-registration is required.
Between 1863 and 1939, over 118,000 British children were sent to Canada through the Home Children program. Many faced harsh conditions despite promises of better lives.
Dr. Cameron will explore how Victorian literature and popular culture influenced public views on child migration and poverty. Her talk will also highlight stories of hardship, resilience, and the writers who documented it all.
The museum’s Home Child exhibit will be open during the event. More info at CountyMuseum.ca.
