The Town of Greater Napanee has officially lifted the total burn ban that began April 1.
Every spring, a total burn ban is put in place to prevent grass and brush fires. The ban helps protect emergency resources and allows spring vegetation to grow. Even though the ground may seem wet, many factors increase fire risk. The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) considers vegetation types, seasonal changes, and fire intensity before setting fire restrictions.
The annual burn ban started in 2016, and since then, the number of out-of-control fires has dropped.
As of yesterday, May 5, open-air fires are allowed again—but a burn permit is still required. Residents can apply for a permit easily through the town’s website before lighting any fire.
