Greater Napanee council is considering a new plan to protect a rare collection of historical newspapers.
At their April 22 meeting, councillors heard from Heidi Linde of the Heritage Committee, who asked the Town to take over a large archive of local newspapers and photos dating back to 1875. The collection is currently stored by local historian Mr. Eadie, who inherited it from former Napanee Beaver editor Adam Prudhomme. Storage space is now running out.
Linde said the Lennox and Addington Museum is unable to take the items due to space limits. She also noted the 2023 closure of the Lennox and Addington Historical Society, which previously preserved such materials.
The Heritage Committee asked the Town to consider using existing municipal buildings for storage. They also offered volunteers to help organize the collection. Council supported the idea, and Town staff will report back on possible storage sites. No new funding is requested.
