Police in Prince Edward County are warning the community to watch out for a new wave of mail fraud scams. The Ontario Provincial Police say several people have reported getting letters claiming they won the lottery or are owed money from an unclaimed life insurance policy.
The letters often include a phone number and ask recipients to keep the matter secret. Once victims call, scammers ask for money to cover fake fees or insurance costs.
Police say scammers use these tactics to prevent people from checking with family or friends. While traditional mail scams are less common now, they still happen and can be convincing.
The OPP is urging everyone to be cautious of letters offering surprise inheritances or prizes. You should never pay upfront fees to collect a prize, and always double-check contact details before taking action.
Suspected fraud should be reported to police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
