Childcare centres in Lennox and Addington County will receive more funding, but there’s a catch. At a recent council meeting, Lynn Chenier, Director of Social Services, shared that Prince Edward Lennox and Addington Social Services (PELASS) will receive about $172,000 in extra funding for 2025. The money comes fully from federal and provincial sources, meaning no extra cost to local taxpayers.
This funding is meant to help expand existing childcare centres or build new ones, but centre operators must apply for the funds. However, Chenier also said the province has reduced the number of new childcare spaces planned for the region, and it’s unclear what the long-term impact will be.
Chenier also updated council on homelessness and housing programs. With a new bylaw limiting encampments in public parks, some fear more people will be forced onto the streets. Councillor Terry Richardson warned the situation may get worse as warming centres close for the summer.
Chenier said there are no new strategies in place and noted limited resources. She added that support can’t be forced on those not ready for housing.
Council members agreed to keep watching the situation closely.
