Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) is revolutionizing patient care with its latest robotic surgery advancement. In a groundbreaking procedure, KHSC’s surgical teams successfully combined two complex robotic procedures—gallbladder surgery and colorectal surgery—into a single session. This innovative approach reduces the need for multiple hospital visits, minimizes exposure to anesthesia, and shortens recovery times, marking a significant milestone for southeastern Ontario’s robotic surgery program.
The successful combination of surgeries required meticulous planning and coordination among KHSC’s skilled surgical teams. Dr. Sunil Patel, lead of the robotic surgery program, emphasized the hospital’s commitment to finding cutting-edge solutions for patients. “By combining these procedures, we reduce risks and help patients recover faster,” said Dr. Patel.
KHSC has rapidly become one of Canada’s leading centers for robotic-assisted surgeries, with its current system serving patients across multiple specialties. The hospital plans to acquire a second robotic system soon, expanding its capacity and allowing it to offer robotic surgeries for liver, gallbladder, and pancreatic procedures.
Robotic surgery provides numerous benefits, including smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, and faster recovery, positioning KHSC at the forefront of surgical innovation.
