Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Prince Edward County have charged a man in connection with an alleged lottery scam targeting an elderly person.
On January 27, 2025, officers launched a fraud investigation after receiving a report that an elderly resident was being tricked into believing they had won the lottery. Police say fraudsters often target vulnerable people, convincing them to pay fees to collect fake winnings.
As a result of the investigation, George England, 56, of Sutton West, Ontario, has been charged with:
- Fraud over $5,000
- Possession of a weapon (two counts)
- Driving without a licence
- Failing to have an insurance card
The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on March 12, 2025.
Police urge residents to stay alert and report fraud to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or call 1-888-310-1122.
