The Greater Napanee Council has approved significant increases to cemetery fees, which will result in a 43% revenue boost for the town.
The new rates include an increase for a single grave plot from $1,409 to $1,680, which also covers care and maintenance. Weekday casket burial fees will rise from $1,148 to $1,450.
While some new fees were proposed, including one for additional excavation costs like tree root removal, this was removed after concerns from Council. The town is also allowing monument companies to install their own foundations, addressing a current financial loss.
Councillor Mike Schenk highlighted the challenge of abandoned cemeteries, which were neglected due to lack of cash flow. The town plans to recover costs while maintaining respect for bereavement.
The fee changes will take effect once approved by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario.
