The Fall Fundraising Gala held on October 27, 2024 by the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte (MBQ) raised $160,000 to support a The MBQ Elder Care Home Project and the Belleville General Hospital Foundation.
These services are critical as First Nations people face higher rates of chronic illness, disability at younger ages, and a life expectancy 10 years shorter than the Canadian average.
Key donors included CN, contributing $50,000 for long-term care, and the Mohawk Council which provided $13,000 to cover the meal.
Chief R. Donald Maracle presented the cheque to the Hospital foundation on Thursday.
The event’s success was credited to generous businesses, community members, and volunteers.
Wayne Sheppard, chair of the BGH Foundation board, was very grateful for the donation.
The gala demonstrated the community’s strong commitment to improving health care and supporting its most vulnerable members.
