The Canada Post strike could end as early as next week, bringing relief to Canadians awaiting mail and packages.
Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon has asked the Canada Industrial Relations Board to review the stalled negotiations. If the board finds talks have failed, it could order striking postal workers back to work.
The board will decide whether to step in. If it agrees, the strike will end, and workers will stay on their current contract until May 22, 2025.
The strike began four weeks ago, halting mail and package deliveries nationwide.
While both sides can still reach an agreement, time is running out. The board’s decision could be the final step to resolve the strike.
To prevent future deadlocks, the minister has also ordered an inquiry to understand why negotiations broke down. The inquiry will provide recommendations to improve how Canada Post and its union negotiate moving forward.
