The Ontario government is investing up to $18.3 million to support the construction of 3,895 new homes in Prince Edward County. This funding comes from the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund, which provides $970 million for drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure.
The County will use the funds to build the Wellington Regional Water Treatment Plant, replacing outdated facilities in Wellington and Picton. This project will provide clean water, support population growth, and create more housing opportunities.
To meet the increasing demand, the government has allocated an additional $250 million to the fund, bringing its total to $1.2 billion. A second round of applications is now open, with $120 million set aside for small, rural, and northern municipalities.
The 2024 Ontario budget also includes $1.8 billion in housing-enabling infrastructure funding and rewards municipalities through the Building Faster Fund for reaching housing targets.
