Construction work is well underway at the W.J. Henderson Recreation Center in Amherstview.
Loyalist Township council, fundraising committee and local media were recently invited for a walkthrough of the site, to receive a first-hand updated on the construction.
Township Mayor Jim Hegadorn shared with myFM it’s exciting to see the progress.
When this project first began, the township aimed to modernize the facility, improve accessibility, reduce emissions, and move toward electrification and future net-zero options. They secured $16.5 million from the Federal Government’s Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program.
Their goal is to finish the two lobby areas and the downstairs changing rooms by late August or early September. In the next few weeks, excavation will start for the extension that will include a new 8-lane pool and a leisure pool, which will take about a year and a half to complete. Next summer, they will begin work on the rink, focusing on the ice pad and the boards.
After hearing this, Hegadorn shared what he’s most looking forward to.
