In a recent scam, cybercriminals are tricking people into downloading malware by using a fake security app.
Local police are warning that they send a text message claiming a big financial transaction was made from your bank account and tell you to call a number if you didn’t authorize it. But the transaction didn’t happen—it’s just a scare tactic.
If you call the number, you’ll reach a cybercriminal who tells you to download a fake security app disguised as McAfee Security. This app is made to take over your device. If you install it, the cybercriminals can steal your data and control your phone completely. They can even install more malware and access your personal info.
To avoid falling for this scam:
- Only get apps from trusted places like the Google Play Store or Apple Store. These platforms check apps for safety, so they’re less likely to be harmful.
- If you get a text about a strange transaction, contact your bank directly using the info on their official website. Don’t use the info from the text.
- Always pause and think before acting. Scammers want you to rush and not think, so don’t fall for their tricks.
